Tuesday Feb 18th

Good afternoon families,

I hope you all enjoyed a long weekend and got some time outside. I am still working towards keeping you all up to date better through the blog. Obviously this is something I need to work on.

I have sent out an email telling all parents the up and coming field studies. Due to student voice, we had to rush and book some places back-to-back. We are really hoping that all goes well in getting our volunteers!

This is the letter that was sent home today through school messenger.

Below you will find the dates of each field study for the remainder of the year. If you are interested in volunteering, please email your child teacher the date(s) you are interested. We will then confirm that your security clearance is up to date and you have completed your annual registration form. Your classroom teacher will send you a confirmation email to inform you of possible next steps and/or which dates they will require your support. If you are no longer able to commit to a date you identified, please give your classroom teacher as much time as possible to find an alternate volunteer.

Students have had an amazing week getting to know each other, the class routines and reviewing concepts taught last year. For example . . . . . . in Math we have been playing two Math games to review place value. Have your child teach you either 'guess my number' or 'place value war'. By the end of grade three students in grade three should be able to understand, represent and say numbers up to the thousands place value (9 999). One of the key things that we worked on when we say numbers is to avoid using the word 'and'. Have your child explain why. . . . in Art we have been reviewing colour. We already know colours but we reviewed which colours are considered primary and secondary colours. We then identified warm and cool colours. We should have our art pieces completed for parent teacher interviews. . . . in writing we are getting back into the groove of remembering capitals at the beginning of sentences and periods at the end of sentences. Today at school we had a Math problem. We are suppose to figure out how many pencils might be in two boxes if there is about 500 pencils (TD). We tried multiple strategies to figure out the answer (KC). For example some used a picture, division, and adding. This problem was an easier problem to learn the process of problem solving. In Science we were planning and talking about our field study tomorrow. We get to learn more about the new central library and other interesting buildings around the area. Our purpose for tomorrow field study is to explore different buildings and be able to compare them (GA). At the end of the day today we did exploration time. We had building centers. We were building structures (DD). This is to get us ready for our big project which we will be introduced to next week. Reminders - Tomorrow is our field study - dress for the weather. Only bring items that are needed in our backpack. Leave everything else at home.

This afternoon students in room 7 explored the Scientific Method. We began by listing the 7 steps. Next we watched a small video clip to help understand each step. Students are in the process of creating a vocabulary flip chart looking at each word to understand the process.  The words we are exploring are: procedure, problem, hypothesis, conclusion, new questions, materials, observations. Ask your child which order these go in! Student Reflections:  "Today I finished my zones of regulation tools." (DD) "Today we did a flip book of the Scientific method." (AF) "We continued to work on place value riddles." (GA) Reminders Please book a time for interviews, they are now open.
