Friday September 6

Students have had an amazing week getting to know each other, the class routines and reviewing concepts taught last year. For example . . .

. . . in Math we have been playing two Math games to review place value. Have your child teach you either 'guess my number' or 'place value war'. By the end of grade three students in grade three should be able to understand, represent and say numbers up to the thousands place value (9 999). One of the key things that we worked on when we say numbers is to avoid using the word 'and'. Have your child explain why.

. . . in Art we have been reviewing colour. We already know colours but we reviewed which colours are considered primary and secondary colours. We then identified warm and cool colours. We should have our art pieces completed for parent teacher interviews.

. . . in writing we are getting back into the groove of remembering capitals at the beginning of sentences and periods at the end of sentences. Students completed a small writing sample to use as a baseline assessment and we started our weekly TWAS (This Week At School). in your child backpack you will have found a yellow writing journal. This will be where students write YOU a letter about different things. Sometimes it will be about their week at school, maybe a field study they went on, or maybe an important question. Please take time to read this letter and discuss it with your child. I will not be using this particular writing journal as assessment as I am encouraging students to enjoy writing and get their ideas down. Feel free to write back to your child, help them with corrections or encourage them to complete the writing over the weekend. Please remind your child to return their TWAS book on Monday so we can continue to write you letters at the end of the week.

At our welcome back assembly, Mr. Emery left the students with a question to think about . . what is important to you as a learner. Here are some of the responses from the students in room 7:
-        Math because I will get a stronger brain (MM)
-        Listening to the teacher so I can stay safe (SW)
-        Science because I get to learn new things to do in Science (AF)
-       Writing so I can get better at writing notes (DD)
-    Writing because when we get better at it we will be able to a job better (JV)

Reminders
- white envelopes were sent home Tuesday. Please fill out the forms inside and return them to the school.
- you can book teacher conferences starting on Thursday - please find a time that works best for you and your family.

Welcome to Online Learning

Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s):       Thank you for your patience as we work through some necessary planning in preparation for resuming structured learning opportunities for your child. I understand there has been a lot of uncertainty about what learning is going to look like moving forward. I can assure you that we are going to work on key learning outcomes at-home within the parameters established by the province and CBE.       To help me understand your family’s access to technology, can you please provide responses to the following three questions:   §    Does your child have access to a computer, laptop, iPad/tablet, smart phone? If so which types of technology might be accessible?    §    Does your child have access to the Internet?   §    Is your only option a paper-based education for your child?       While the lessons I will be providing are aimed...
Welcome to the 2019 – 2020 school year!   I would like to take the time to introduce myself, Denean Langlois. I will be your child’s grade 3 teacher. This year we will be working in room 7.   I will be waiting outside to meet you and your child Tuesday morning. I will be standing by the basketball hoops carrying a clipboard with my name on it to make it easier for you. Students will be using the north doors when they enter and exit the school at all times.   I would like to remind you of our school hours: 8:55am – 3:35pm, with early dismissal Fridays at 12:30pm.    To help your child be successful this year, please consider the following:   Eat a healthy, hearty breakfast   Have a good night’s sleep (go to bed at a reasonable time)   Send a healthy snack for morning flex time and if something is needed in the afternoon   Send indoor running shoes   My blog is in the process...

Tuesday January 14

Happy Tuesday! I hope all of you are dressing warm for this weather. It is unbelievable how cold it is outside. These past two days week we have continued with our exploration of the human ear. Students made 3D models of the parts of the ear and then presented their models to the class. It was interesting to hear what materials were chosen for each part. For example, one student shared they chose a backwards cup for the pinna so the sound has a big opening and then funnel into the ear canal. One student explained they chose a material that was flexible to represent the ear drum so that the sound waves can create a vibration which can then travel through the bones to the cochlea. Ask your child how the ear works and what the purpose of each part may be. Field trip forms for the zoo were handed out today. I will need 5 volunteers for this field study. If you are available, please let me know through email. I cannot take more than 5 so the first 5 people will have preference on thi...
