Week 13

Good afternoon Grade 3 Families,

This is a very sad week for us as this will be the last week where we see all of your wonderful faces on the google meet ups, we will be reading the last Friday letter you wrote to us and of course watching the talent show to share your passions. All the grade three teachers are sad to see the year come to an end. On that note, we will be changing the time of the meet up this coming Friday. Instead of meeting at 1pm, we will be meeting at 9am. This will allow for siblings to watch the grade 4 celebration and be done before noon. Please make note of that in your calendar so your child does not miss out.

In closing, we would like to share some housekeeping items with you to keep you informed.

  • Picking up items – Mr. Laidlaw will have sent time of when and where you can pick up the rest of your child’s learning items. We have placed everything that we can find into clear plastic bags with the childs name on the outside.

  • Google Classroom – we will be leaving the classroom open over the summer, HOWEVER it will be in a READ ONLY format. This should allow you to be able to click on the links and resources we have complied during the past 3 months. You will not be able to submit any work to the teachers.

  • Assigned work – Teachers will be returning ALL assignments submitted through google classroom next week sometime. You will find that the student email account will be overrun with new mail. Feel free to take a moment to clean that up for the student before September. It is recommended that you select “all” and delete the emails. They are no longer needed.

  • Raz Kids – We are thankful to Raz kids for offering this free service over the past three months. Unfortunately, this service will no longer be available over the summer. Please don’t forget about the Calgary Public Library. I know their service is a bit interrupted due to the current situation, but when it reopens, all students have free access to the books among other types of content. I believe that they also have a small selection of digital books.

Students have had an amazing week getting to know each other, the class routines and reviewing concepts taught last year. For example . . . . . . in Math we have been playing two Math games to review place value. Have your child teach you either 'guess my number' or 'place value war'. By the end of grade three students in grade three should be able to understand, represent and say numbers up to the thousands place value (9 999). One of the key things that we worked on when we say numbers is to avoid using the word 'and'. Have your child explain why. . . . in Art we have been reviewing colour. We already know colours but we reviewed which colours are considered primary and secondary colours. We then identified warm and cool colours. We should have our art pieces completed for parent teacher interviews. . . . in writing we are getting back into the groove of remembering capitals at the beginning of sentences and periods at the end of sentences. Tuesday October 13

Today at school we had a Math problem. We are suppose to figure out how many pencils might be in two boxes if there is about 500 pencils (TD). We tried multiple strategies to figure out the answer (KC). For example some used a picture, division, and adding. This problem was an easier problem to learn the process of problem solving. In Science we were planning and talking about our field study tomorrow. We get to learn more about the new central library and other interesting buildings around the area. Our purpose for tomorrow field study is to explore different buildings and be able to compare them (GA). At the end of the day today we did exploration time. We had building centers. We were building structures (DD). This is to get us ready for our big project which we will be introduced to next week. Reminders - Tomorrow is our field study - dress for the weather. Only bring items that are needed in our backpack. Leave everything else at home.

Wednesday September 11

This afternoon students in room 7 explored the Scientific Method. We began by listing the 7 steps. Next we watched a small video clip to help understand each step. Students are in the process of creating a vocabulary flip chart looking at each word to understand the process.  The words we are exploring are: procedure, problem, hypothesis, conclusion, new questions, materials, observations. Ask your child which order these go in! Student Reflections:  "Today I finished my zones of regulation tools." (DD) "Today we did a flip book of the Scientific method." (AF) "We continued to work on place value riddles." (GA) Reminders Please book a time for interviews, they are now open.
