Google Classroom and Meet

Yesterday, our principal let you know that the Calgary Board of Education’s was activating Google Meet and Google Classroom to enable teachers and students to better connect with each other. This email outlines what to expect as we begin setting up times to connect with our students over the coming days.

Accessing Google Classroom for the First Time

Starting on Monday, April 6, we will be using Google Classroom as a learning platform as we continue ongoing learning from home. Below is a brief introduction to Google Classroom and how students at Maple Ridge School will be accessing the tool.

Google Classroom

Google Classroom is an online platform that enables us to communicate with our students as well as assign and distribute tasks. Google Classroom gives us the ability work with our students in safe, manageable, and appropriate way. It will also help students manage their work while learning from home.

Students will access Google Classroom using their CBE G Suite ID (username@educbe.ca). As we begin to use these new teaching and learning tools, we will work with our students and their families to help them understand both the benefits and risks of using online tools.

Accessing Google Meet for the First Time

Google Meet
Google Meet is a video conferencing application that enables us to host and our students to join organized ‘meetings’ in real-time. We can also record meetings and make the recording available to students to view at a later time. We are able to share their screen and guide students through tasks and/or documents and websites they wish to share.

Students will access Google Meet using their CBE Gmail address (username@educbe.ca). As we begin to use these teaching and learning tools, we will work with our students to help them understand both the benefits and risks in using online tools.

First Google Meet Meeting:

We are planning to have our first Google Meet meeting on TUESDAY APRIL 7th at 1pm. I have sent you emails sharing your child’s CBE Gmail address and password.  If you have misplaced this information or require it to be sent again, please let me know. Students can access the google Meet by going into our virtual classroom and clicking on the link in the news feed. I will have the link posted 5 minutes before the actual meet-up.

This first meeting will be a chance to connect through a video chat and reconnect after being away from the school and classroom.

If you are having difficulties accessing these resources, please contact me so that I can help you and your child connect.

Thank you for your support and patience as we all adjust to ongoing learning at a distance. We will keep you informed every step of the way.

Week 13

Good afternoon Grade 3 Families,   This is a very sad week for us as this will be the last week where we see all of your wonderful faces on the google meet ups,  we will be reading t he last Friday letter you wrote to us and of course  watching  the  talent show to share your passions.  All the grade three teachers are sad to see the year come to an end.  On that note, we will be changing the time of the meet up this coming Friday. Instead of meeting at 1pm, we will be meeting at 9am. This will allow for siblings to watch the grade 4 celebration and be done b efore noon. Please make not e  of that in your calendar so your child does not miss out.    In closing, w e would like to share some  housekeeping  items with you to keep you informed.    Picking up items  – Mr. Laidlaw will have sent  a  time  of when and  where you can pick up the rest of your child’s learning ite...

Week 5

Good afternoon Grade 3 Families,   We hope everyone is doing well. The grade 3 teachers have been reviewing the work students have been handing in  this past week.  We are pleased with the work we have been seeing and are hoping that the changes  we have made to the structure of our classrooms  have made  schoolwork  easier for your family.    Please ensure that when your child is submitting an  assignment,  they click the submit button on the top  right-hand  corner of the screen. This ensures that their teacher knows the assignment has been  completed!              On a side note, please know we appreciate all the work our families are doing at home with the students. We understand every family has their own complexities at home and everyone is trying their best. We are here for all of you, to help you through this new type of learning. Please reach out if there ...

Week 4

Week  4:        The grade 3 teachers have been reviewing the work students have been handing in along with the expectations from Alberta Learning. We have decided to change things a bit with the hopes that this will be easier on students and families as they juggle th e “new normal”.    Students will have expected assignments and optional assignments.  Each assignment leads to the next therefore they will need to be completed in order but not necessarily on the suggested day. Feedback will be given to students  as assignments are completed. We have also included rubrics and checklists to help students know how they will be marked as well as they can meet high er  expectations.    Optional assignments, such as the passion project, are included for students who want extra work. These will not be formally  assessed but  will be considered when looking at final marks for  Language Arts....
