Tuesday December 3

Our classroom has been very busy this past week. My apologies for not writing more on our blog. To get you up to date here are some highlights happening in our room:

Math - Ms. McCurdy continues to focus on addition strategies. We are specifically looking at addition within problems. For example, one of the questions students had the choice to solve was ?4 + ??= 1??. Student had to use addition strategies to solve for the unknown numbers (?'s). These types of questions allow for multiple entry points. Students who are comfortable with regrouping can challenge themselves with using higher numbers, where as other students still trying to figure out the most effective strategy can work with simpler numbers. You can make it more challenging by putting more set numbers into the question. For example 1?5 + ?2? = 6?3. The more numbers that are placed in, the fewer choices students have making the work a bit harder and a little more complex.

Science - Students have began to build their models. All groups have completed the outside walls of their model today. It is amazing the pride that is shining through students as they see their designs come alive. We do need 9 more cereal boxes to finish this project. We need to add the second floor and the roof. If you have any, please send them to school. It is best that the main part of the box not be creased as this looses the stability of the structure.

Writing - Writing our report for this project seems to be the biggest struggle of all. Students are more excited to talk about their designs than write about them. Ms. McCurdy and I are exploring ways to get students to get those amazing ideas down onto paper in an organized way. The excitement they have has made the writing all jumbled and unorganized. Students have been reading non-examples (unorganized writing) compared to strong example of organized writing and are realizing the importance of planning their ideas before starting the activity. I hope to get students all on google doc by next week so parents can have a sneak peak into the writing of this report.

Reading - Today we started a small reading project to entice students into silently reading. They have all chosen either a fiction book or a non fiction book. As they read there is are multiple questions that they will be answering to reflect on. I have asked students that this reading project be done at school at this time and to not take the books home. All are very excited about it and I don't want it to be rushed.

Reminders - If you are available Dec 17th for the field trip to the Glenbow, please let me know via email.

Week 13

Good afternoon Grade 3 Families,   This is a very sad week for us as this will be the last week where we see all of your wonderful faces on the google meet ups,  we will be reading t he last Friday letter you wrote to us and of course  watching  the  talent show to share your passions.  All the grade three teachers are sad to see the year come to an end.  On that note, we will be changing the time of the meet up this coming Friday. Instead of meeting at 1pm, we will be meeting at 9am. This will allow for siblings to watch the grade 4 celebration and be done b efore noon. Please make not e  of that in your calendar so your child does not miss out.    In closing, w e would like to share some  housekeeping  items with you to keep you informed.    Picking up items  – Mr. Laidlaw will have sent  a  time  of when and  where you can pick up the rest of your child’s learning ite...

Week 5

Good afternoon Grade 3 Families,   We hope everyone is doing well. The grade 3 teachers have been reviewing the work students have been handing in  this past week.  We are pleased with the work we have been seeing and are hoping that the changes  we have made to the structure of our classrooms  have made  schoolwork  easier for your family.    Please ensure that when your child is submitting an  assignment,  they click the submit button on the top  right-hand  corner of the screen. This ensures that their teacher knows the assignment has been  completed!              On a side note, please know we appreciate all the work our families are doing at home with the students. We understand every family has their own complexities at home and everyone is trying their best. We are here for all of you, to help you through this new type of learning. Please reach out if there ...

Week 4

Week  4:        The grade 3 teachers have been reviewing the work students have been handing in along with the expectations from Alberta Learning. We have decided to change things a bit with the hopes that this will be easier on students and families as they juggle th e “new normal”.    Students will have expected assignments and optional assignments.  Each assignment leads to the next therefore they will need to be completed in order but not necessarily on the suggested day. Feedback will be given to students  as assignments are completed. We have also included rubrics and checklists to help students know how they will be marked as well as they can meet high er  expectations.    Optional assignments, such as the passion project, are included for students who want extra work. These will not be formally  assessed but  will be considered when looking at final marks for  Language Arts....
