Tuesday November 5

Wow, I must apologize to all of you. I have not been keeping you up to date with the comings and goings in room 7.

Language Arts
Students have recently completed their Who Would Win books. Using the co-created rubric, each student self assessed their work and commented on their strengths and areas where they would improve next time. The Who Would Win Books will be available to read at the Parent Teacher Interviews as well as the rubric in which students used throughout the project.

Our next project is creating a brochure to inform and teach others about a famous building in one of the 4 countries we are studying. We began this project creating questions to guide our research, we have started to conduct our research, and are beginning to look at how to write detailed sentences with the new information learned. Some students have been brave in sharing their work with the class to receive feedback and improve their sentences. I hope more students will begin to feel comfortable in sharing their work with others, so we can learn along side our peers.

Math
Students continue to work on number sense through problem solving. Specifically we have been looking at rounding and estimation through word problems. Students received multiple problems to choose from and try to solve. We spoke about the importance of organizing our work to make it clear for the reader and to demonstrate what we were thinking. It is always amazing to see the variety of strategies that students come up with to solve the same problem.

As a way to blend our Science inquiry, students are learning how to collect data and analyze that data through bar graphs. This is something we have just started to explore. As your child what graph they are making; features for staff, athletes, important guests or customers.

Science
We are continuing to enhance our understanding of buildings and purposes of buildings. We brainstormed possible features that could be in the future arena, created a survey that students answered as well as parents and will use that information to guide our plans. On Thursday we will be having a guest speaker from Excel Homes to teach us how to draw blueprints. Using this information and new learning, we hope that students will be able to create their own blueprints for their event proposal.

Field Studies
I have been having a couple emails with parents inquiring about our plans for upcoming field studies. At the beginning of each month I hope to let you know of our possible plans. I apologize that I have not done this yet. Here is what we have planned for November.

Thursday Nov.  7 - Guest speaker - Learning how to draw blueprints
Wednesday Nov. 20 - Guest Speaker - Engineer to speak to structure and bridges (in-class volunteers welcome)
Monday Nov. 25 - Field Study tour of Calgary Saddledome (limited to only 5 adults, teacher, student teacher, + 3 parents) If you are interested please contact me ASAP. If I have more than 3 parents who are interested I may have to do a draw for fairness.

At this point we are looking for December opportunities that match our current direction within Science and Social Studies. I will keep you informed if another opportunity arises within the month of December.

Today in math we learned multiple strategies for multiplication. We learned that skip counting was a good tool for most of the class. for example: 4 x 5=?? 5, 10, 15, 20 Also 5x5= 25.We are only going up to 5x5. We started floor hockey in gym we started using bean bags but recently we switched to pucks.  How we do it is we find a partner and pass the puck or bean bag back and forth, some times we do passing around the gym in a circle and some times we do it up down the gym. We are reading Wonder we are almost done it it is a cool book because it has a bunch of different perspectives by different characters. Mattie, Oliver, Ariah Reminders Field study forms need to be in as soon as possible.

Week 7

Good afternoon Grade 3 Families,   Thank you to  all  our parents and caregivers for your continued support and encouragement as we plan, review, meet and assess our students.  It is just as much a learning curve for you as it has been for us and our students. We wouldn’t be able to be as successful as we are without you. The grade three teachers  appreciate the feedback received from parents through the survey and are continuing to modify and enhance our planning to make things easier for everyone.  The  survey  is  still available for those  who would still like to contribute their feedback.   It   should take only a few moments.    Link to  s urvey:   Grade 3 Parent Feed Back Survey     Week  7  Learning Plan:     Week 7 Learning Plan Link     Reminders:     Monday:  Meet up 1pm – Go through the week’s assignmen...

Friday September 6

Students have had an amazing week getting to know each other, the class routines and reviewing concepts taught last year. For example . . . . . . in Math we have been playing two Math games to review place value. Have your child teach you either 'guess my number' or 'place value war'. By the end of grade three students in grade three should be able to understand, represent and say numbers up to the thousands place value (9 999). One of the key things that we worked on when we say numbers is to avoid using the word 'and'. Have your child explain why. . . . in Art we have been reviewing colour. We already know colours but we reviewed which colours are considered primary and secondary colours. We then identified warm and cool colours. We should have our art pieces completed for parent teacher interviews. . . . in writing we are getting back into the groove of remembering capitals at the beginning of sentences and periods at the end of sentences. Students comp...
