Grade threes are currently working on a large project where they are becoming designers and engineers of of the new event center. To understand what features may need to be added to the event center, students went and toured the Calgary Saddledome to learn what features it has that we may include in our deign, or features that we may want to not include. We realized from our tour that there are many features that make the Calgary Saddledome a unique building. Ask your child what are some of the features that make it a memorable and record holding building.

Students are applying the new information learned towards their reports. Today, we specifically worked on our topic sentence (SC/AH)). This is a very hard concept as we have been working on complex sentences, but now we need to go back to a simple sentence for a topic sentence.

This afternoon we reviewed some of the constraints the Saddldome has as well as some of the positive features. We worked with our groups to add and modify our plans to ensure we are considering all viewpoints. For example one consideration that our tour guide Rick mentioned, is we need to consider how we can make our building wheel chair accessible as that is one of the limitations the current building has (TD).

On our field study we also had the opportunity to look at three types of bridges - a beam bridge, a cantilever bridge and a suspension bridge (KC). As your child what made each bridge different from another.

On a side note, at Student Learning Conversations it was brought to my attention that many families would like to know some of the upcoming dates for field studies. We have booked a couple of places a head of time, but sometimes we are searching for perfect opportunities that match the learning during the learning (Saddledome for example).

The following dates and places have been confirmed.

Glenbow Museum - Dec. 17th
Calgary Zoo - Jan 30th
Arts Commons - Feb 19
Studio Bell - March 4
Earth Science Conference - March 17th

We are working on booking other locations and finalizing other dates. As they come out we will inform you. If you are able to volunteer for Dec. 17th to the Glenbow museum please let me know via email.

Today in math we learned multiple strategies for multiplication. We learned that skip counting was a good tool for most of the class. for example: 4 x 5=?? 5, 10, 15, 20 Also 5x5= 25.We are only going up to 5x5. We started floor hockey in gym we started using bean bags but recently we switched to pucks.  How we do it is we find a partner and pass the puck or bean bag back and forth, some times we do passing around the gym in a circle and some times we do it up down the gym. We are reading Wonder we are almost done it it is a cool book because it has a bunch of different perspectives by different characters. Mattie, Oliver, Ariah Reminders Field study forms need to be in as soon as possible.

Week 7

Good afternoon Grade 3 Families,   Thank you to  all  our parents and caregivers for your continued support and encouragement as we plan, review, meet and assess our students.  It is just as much a learning curve for you as it has been for us and our students. We wouldn’t be able to be as successful as we are without you. The grade three teachers  appreciate the feedback received from parents through the survey and are continuing to modify and enhance our planning to make things easier for everyone.  The  survey  is  still available for those  who would still like to contribute their feedback.   It   should take only a few moments.    Link to  s urvey:   Grade 3 Parent Feed Back Survey     Week  7  Learning Plan:     Week 7 Learning Plan Link     Reminders:     Monday:  Meet up 1pm – Go through the week’s assignmen...

Friday September 6

Students have had an amazing week getting to know each other, the class routines and reviewing concepts taught last year. For example . . . . . . in Math we have been playing two Math games to review place value. Have your child teach you either 'guess my number' or 'place value war'. By the end of grade three students in grade three should be able to understand, represent and say numbers up to the thousands place value (9 999). One of the key things that we worked on when we say numbers is to avoid using the word 'and'. Have your child explain why. . . . in Art we have been reviewing colour. We already know colours but we reviewed which colours are considered primary and secondary colours. We then identified warm and cool colours. We should have our art pieces completed for parent teacher interviews. . . . in writing we are getting back into the groove of remembering capitals at the beginning of sentences and periods at the end of sentences. Students comp...
